Enzo took the liberty of fixing Kyrie a plate. Crackers with peanut butter, a granola bar, half a can of fruit cocktail—the other half of which he ate—and a one-liter bottle of water. Breakfast of champions.

Kyrie ate as he dressed and at that point, they were both in sync as they laced up their moc toe boots. Kyrie was wearing black denim jeans, a white thermal with a fitted black t-shirt over it, and a black beanie. Enzo was wearing a somewhat similar get-up: black denim jeans, white thermal, black hoodie, and a black and gray trapper hat.

Enzo tossed Kyrie a pair of form-fitting armored tactical gloves and they equipped themselves for the hostile world outside.

Enzo’s eyes met Kyrie's, “Ready?”

Kyrie shouldered his katana. He patted his front pocket—tactical knife, check. He patted his back waist—Glock, check. He patted his back pocket—palm-sized torch flashlight, check. Lightweight backpack equipped with only the essentials, check. “Ready.”

They slid the bookcase out of the way and made their way into the hallway. Kyrie reached for the attic’s drawstring and gave it a gentle tug. The staircase unfurled before him. Kyrie ascended and Enzo followed close behind, pulling the staircase back up behind him.

Enzo chuckled, “Watch out for the hole in the floor.”

Kyrie rolled his eyes, “You always throw that in my face. It was one time.”

“One time too many. How do you fall through an escape hole that you yourself made?”

Enzo laughed and continued, “It don’t make no sense.”

“Yeah, yeah.”

Kyrie propped himself up through the additional hole they made through the roof. Kyrie offered Enzo a hand to help him ascend.

The cool breeze chilled their faces.

Kyrie took in a deep breath.

That was one benefit of living by the northern sea, the fog rolled in every morning like clockwork and pushed the stench of death and decay away.
